Description
The origins of the San Osvaldo winery date back to the 1930s, when Baron Lajos Babos (1884-1968), former admiral of the Austro-Hungarian navy, decided to settle in the easternmost corner of Veneto, on the border with Friuli.
Babos himself, having fallen in love with the region, founded a winery in Loncon di Annone Veneto, a name which recalls the patron saint of the small hamlet, Oswald of Northumbria.
Continued first by his daughter Bibi, the business then passed to the Zoppas Group in the 1980s, after a period of great fame which began in the 1950s.
OSWALD OF NORTHUMBRIA, THE WARRIOR KING MADE SAINT
Living in the first half of the seventh century, Oswald became king of the British kingdoms of Deira and Bernicia after a period of exile during which he converted to Christianity. After an eight-year reign, he was defeated and killed in battle by Penda, the pagan king of Mercia. Following his canonization, he became particularly venerated in the Anglo-Saxon countries, as well as in certain areas of Northern Italy, including Lison di Annone Veneto, where he is patron saint.
San Osvaldo Pinot Grigio
A native variety from France, a mutation of Pinot Noir. Small, cylindrical, compact bunch. Grey-blue, bloom-covered grapes; small, three-lobed leaves. The wine: Strong straw yellow colour. Characteristic aromas of tropical fruit, pear, citrus fruit. Delicate mouth feel, slightly acidulous and lingering. Tips: Serve at 8-10° C. Open just before drinking. Recommended as an aperitif with shellfish and fish. A wine to be enjoyed young to fully savour the sensorial properties. Store in a cool place out of direct sunlight.
